Abstract

The Selikuran tradition is a typical religio-cultural practice of the Javanese people which is held on the 21st night of Ramadan through joint prayer, bancakan, and lighting of lanterns. More than just a spiritual ritual, Selikuran contains a dimension of cultural communication that affirms solidarity and the sustainability of traditions. This research aims to examine how the Selikuran tradition is represented in the new media ecosystem and build local cultural authenticity that reaches more across cultures, even globally. This research method uses Kress & van Leeuwen's multimodal analysis by examining the integration of visual, audio, text, and audience interaction in video, The analysis is directed at the construction of authenticity, representation strategies, and reach potential. This research shows that the digitization of Selikuran does not only function as a cultural archive, but also as a cultural communication practice that facilitates cross-cultural and religious understanding. The authenticity of the simple documentation style proved to attract the attention of local audiences, while the more aesthetically pleasing production expanded the reach. Selikuran in the digital space can be read as a model of Islamic communication that presents local authenticity while opening up a space for dialogue with the global community.
